Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 to 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1-2 cups diced vegetables (carrots, corn, peas)
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

 

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Potatoes: Boil peeled and quartered potatoes in a pot of water for about 20 minutes until tender. Drain and mash with butter. Season generously with salt and pepper. Set aside the creamy mashed potatoes.
  2. Sauté the Vegetables: While potatoes are cooking, heat a sauté pan over medium heat. Melt 4 tablespoons of butter and add chopped onion. Cook until tender. Include carrots into the sauté. Adjust cooking times if using other vegetables.
  3. Brown the Beef: Add ground beef, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce to the sautéed vegetables. Cook until beef is browned, breaking it into smaller pieces. Season the filling with salt and pepper.
  4. Preheat and Layer: Preheat oven to 400°F. Evenly layer the cooked meat mixture at the bottom of a baking dish.
  5. Top with Mashed Potatoes: Spoon the creamy mashed potatoes over the meat mixture, creating decorative swirls with a fork.
  6. Bake to Golden Perfection: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 30 minutes, or until the mashed potatoes achieve a delightful golden brown hue.
